Digital and smart homes and cities have become an important research and development area in the 21st century due mainly to their significance to national and international health, economy, safety, transportation, and security, among others.ICT Systems have played a vital role in the emergence and development of smart cities and homes. The impressive advances in areas of information and wired and wireless communications technology have brought with them the prospect of embedding different hierarchies of smartness and intelligence in the modern home and cities. Offering comfort and safe and healthy living with an intelligent form of collaboration with their residents has been the prime goal of smart and digital homes and cities. Contingentupon the settings, the communications may be multifaceted such as mobile agent based and context-aware services or they may be uncomplicated such as controlling the room temperature or its humidity level. Sophisticated situations include the delivery of position/location-aware info content of the resident of the digital home as well as his/her activities.

The availability of inexpensive low-power sensors, the RF IC chips, and the embedded microprocessors/microcontrollers have made tremendous impact on digital homes and cities; with large quantity of sensors, which jointly manage and make the inferences from the collected data on the state of the home and city as well as the actions and behavior of the inhabitants.

As the worldwide life expectancy, especially in developed countries and newly industrialized counties is increasing, the percentage of senior/elderly citizens is increasing at an accelerated pace and most projections suggest that this increase worldwide will reach about 10 millions in the coming decade. Senior citizens usually live in care centers, hospitals or their own homes with some relative supervision/care. Smart homes and cities can be used efficiently and economically in order to accommodate the needs of this population.

The increase of worldwide population, especially in populous countries and cities and the increase migration of citizens to cities have also brought with it challenges in transportation systems, health care, utility’s supplies, learning & education, sensing city dynamics, computing with heterogeneous data sources, managing urban big data, and environmental protection including pollution and others.

In this keynote, we will shed some light on the key enabling Information and Communications technology to smart cities and homes. We will also investigate the advances, current trends, challenges and future in the research and development in smart homes and cities.

Some of our recent research results, especially the ones related to the use of wireless networks and security for smart and digital homes will be presented. Among these, fire detection schemes in forests. An intelligent system for fire prediction based on wireless sensor networks is presented. This system obtains the probability of fire and fire behavior in a particular area. This information allows firefighters to obtain escape paths and determine strategies to fight the fire. A firefighter can access this information with a portable device on every node of the network.

Also, we will introduce an adaptive MAC protocol for distributed wireless LANs that is capable of operating efficiently under bursty traffic conditions. According to the proposed protocol, the mobile station that is granted permission to transmit is selected by means of a neural-based algorithm. Another new protocol for dynamically setting 802.11 wireless LAN

waveforms and transmission power levels based on the wireless channel’s signal to noise ratio will be introduced. Our method, known as Signal-to-Noise Ratio-Waveform Power Adaptation (SNR-WPA), changes the power in discrete steps matched to each of the 802.11 data rate-waveform steps. By matching the power to the spreading symbol rate, our technique maximizes the network throughput while minimizing MAC layer contention. We present other new schemes to authenticate and authorize 802.11 wireless nodes within a network. This new layer of security relies on a neural network decision engine that restricts network access to mobile nodes whose physical location is within a threshold distance from the wireless access point or the controller of the network. Other related wireless research efforts by our group will be presented.

Professor Mohammad S. Obaidat(Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of SCS) is an internationally well-known academic/researcher/ scientist. He received his Ph.D. and M. S. degrees in Computer Engineering with a minor in Computer Science from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA. Dr. Obaidat is a Professor of Computer and Information Science (CIS) at Fordham University, USA. Among his previous positions are Chair of the CIS Department at Fordham University and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Director of the Graduate Program at Monmouth University, Dean of the College of Engineering at Prince Sultan University and Advisor to the President of Philadelphia University for Research, Development and Information Technology. He has received extensive research funding and has published over forty(40)books and over Six Hundreds and Fifty (650) refereed technical articles in scholarly international journals and proceedings of international conferences, and currently working on three more books.  Professor Obaidat has served as a consultant for several corporations and organizations worldwide. Mohammad is the Editor-in-Chief of the Wiley International Journal of Communication Systems, the FTRA Journal of Convergence and the KSIP Journal of Information Processing. He is also an Editor of IEEE Wireless Communications. Between 1991-2006, he served as a Technical Editor and an Area Editor of Simulation: Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulations (SCS) International, TSCS. He also served on the Editorial Advisory Board of  Simulation. He is now an editor of the Wiley Security and Communication Networks Journal,Journal of Networks,  International Journal of Information Technology, Communications and Convergence, IJITCC, Inderscience. He is also an SCS distinguished Lecturer. Between 1996-1999, Dr. Obaidat served as an IEEE/ACM program evaluator of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board/Commission, CSAB/CSAC. Obaidat is the founder and first Chairman of SCS Technical Chapter (Committee) on PECTS (Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems). He has served as the Scientific Advisor for the World Bank/UN Digital Inclusion Workshop- The Role of Information and Communication Technology in Development. Between 1995-2002, he has served as a member of the board of directors of the Society for Computer Simulation International. Between 2002-2004, he has served as Vice President of Conferences of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International SCS. Between 2004-2006, Prof. Obaidat has served as Vice President of Membership of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International SCS. He has been invited to lecture and give keynote speeches worldwide. Boundary value problems for the Poisson equation in a hyperbolic strip

The Dirichlet and the Neumann boundary value problem are solved explicitly for the Poisson equation in a hyperbolic strip within the unit disc of the complex plane. Using the parqueting-reection principle the harmonic Green and Neumann functions are constructed via innite products of linear transformations. They serve to solve the respective boundary value problems. While in general the Dirichlet problem is unconditionally solvable this is not always the case for the Neumann problem. The solvability condition on the data of the Neumann problem is explicitly given and coincides with the well-known one in case of the unit disc. The results are published in [1, 2].

When the Neumann function can be modied in such a way that its normal derivative vanishes identically on the boundary of the domain then also the Neumann problem is unconditionally solvable. This can be arranged e.g. for the upper unit disc investigated in [3]

Dr. Ekrem SAVAS is a professor of mathematics at the Istanbul Commerce University, Istanbul-Turkey. He received M.Sc. (1983) and Ph.D. (1986) degrees in mathematics. As soon as he completed Ph.D he went to Utkal University in India as visiting scholar under the indo –Turkey academic exchange programme for one year. In 1988 and 1993 he became associate and full professor of mathematics respectively. He has been several times at department of mathematics of Indiana Universityof USA under Fulbright programme and NATO grant to do joint works with Prof. Billy Rhoades. Dr. Ekrem Savas’s research covers broadly the sequence spaces and summability. He has contributed numerous research papers in reputed journals and he has supervised several candidates for M. Sc. and Ph. D. degrees. He has actively participated in several national and international conferences. He became member of Turkish Academy of Science on June 2012. Now he has bee working at Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Istanbul Commerce University.

Theory and Applications of the Fractal Interpolation

The processing and interpretation of experimental signals, defined as time series of observations of a certain phenomenon, is a complex goal due to the lack (in many cases) of suitable models to explain how the characteristics of the problemstudied are reflectedon the data collected. The need ofgood quantitative and qualitative methods for the description of the different variablesexplored becomes evident.One of the objectives of this talk is the numerical fractal approach tosome experiments with real signals, whose analysiswasformerly done onlyby mere visual inspection of the record andeventually with the assistance of the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. Beginning from these particular problems, we obtain much more general results based on fractal interpolation, which provide new methods of approximation of functions.In this conference we describe the construction of fractal versions of classical functions as polynomials, trigonometric maps, etc. by means of a particular Iterated Function System of the plane. The closeness between the classical function and its fractal analogue provides good properties of approximation and interpolation to the latter. This type of methodology opens the use of non-smooth and fractal functions in approximation. However, if an order of regularity is neededto solve a given problem, one can impose specific additional conditions to the System and the requirement may be satisfied as well. The procedure involves the definition of an operator mapping standard functions into their dualfractals. The transformation is linear and bounded and some bounds of its norm are established.

Through this operatorwe define families of fractal functions that generalize the classicalSchauder systems of Banach spaces and the orthonormal bases of Hilbert spaces. With an appropriate election of the coefficients of Iterated Function System we definesets of fractal maps that span the most important spaces of functions as C[a,b] or L2[a,b].

Bernstein-Durrmeyer operators with respect to arbitrary measure

In this talk we discuss the Bernstein-Durrmeyer operators with respect to arbitrary measure on the simplex in several dimensions, as well as their analogs on the half-line. This generalization of the classical Bernstein-Durrmeyer operator was introduced by us in the connection with an application in learning theory.

Moreover, we consider a further generalization of this construction: we allow the measure in each term to be different. This allows to include into the same construction further well-known operators like the lassical Bernstein operator and the Kantorovich operator.

We discuss various properties of these operators. The main emphasis of the talk is the question about convergnce of the operators. We discuss the point wise convergence at a point, the uniform convergence as well as the convergence in the corresponding weighted $L^p$-spaces.

Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) and its applications for nonlinear problems

In this talk, the basic ideas of the homotopy analysis method (HAM) for highly nonlinear problems are briefly described, with its applications in hydrodynamics. Unlike perturbation techniques, the HAM does not depend upon any small/large physical parameters, and thus works well for more problems, especially those with strong nonlinearity. This is mainly because, based on the homotopy in topology, the HAM can transfer a nonlinear problem into an infinite number of linear sub-problems without any small/large physical parameters. Besides, the HAM provides us great freedom to choose the equation-type and base function of these linear sub-problems. Especially, unlike all other analytic approximation methods, the HAM provides us a simple way to guarantee the convergence of series solution. So, the HAM is valid even for highly nonlinear problems, and therefore has been widely applied in applied mathematics, physics, finance and engineering. Using the HAM, some new results have been obtained. For example, the multiple steady-state resonant waves in deep and finite water depth were found by means of the HAM, whose wave amplitude, wave number and frequency of each wave component are independent of the time. The existence of these new steady-state resonant waves was then confirmed by physical experiments. All of these applications illustrate the novelty and power of the HAM for highly nonlinear problems.

Through this operatorwe define families of fractal functions that generalize the classicalSchauder systems of Banach spaces and the orthonormal bases of Hilbert spaces. With an appropriate election of the coefficients of Iterated Function System we definesets of fractal maps that span the most important spaces of functions as C[a,b] or L2[a,b].

Prof. Liao gained his PhD in 1992 from Shanghai Jiaotong University, China. Thereafter, he worked in School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University, as a lecturer (1992), associate professor (1993), full professor (1996), distinguished professor of Ministry of Education of China (2000), and chair professor (2015). His research fields are fluid mechanics, computational methods and applied mathematics.

Prof. Liao is the founder of the “homotopy analysis method” (HAM), an analytic approximation method for highly nonlinear problems, which was proposed in his PhD dissertation in 1992. The HAM works even for problems without any small/large physical parameters. Especially, unlike other analytic approximation methods, the HAM provides a simple way to guarantee the convergence of solution series. Besides, the HAM provides great freedom to choose equation-type and solution- expression of high-order approximation equations. Due to these advantages, the HAM has been widely applied in science, engineering and finance. As a founder of the HAM, Prof. Liao published his 1 st book “Beyond Perturbation: An Introduction to the Homotopy Analysis Method” in 2003 via CRC Press, his 2 nd book “Homotopy Analysis Method in Nonlinear Differential Equations” in 2012 via Springer and Higher Education Press, and edited the book “Advances in the Homotopy Analysis Method” in 2013 via World Scientific. His books and 130 journal papers have been cited more than 5000 times by others, with the h-index 38. Prof. Liao was awarded “Shanghai First-class Prize for Natural Science” and “Shanghai Peony Prize for Natural Science” in 2009. He was listed among “the Highly Cited Researcher” and “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” by Thomson Reuters in 2014 (in the fields of mathematics and engineering) and 2015 (in the field of mathematics).

Using the HAM as a powerful tool for nonlinear problems, Prof. Liao and his group successfully found something new/novel. For example, they found, for the first time, the multiple steady-state exactly resonant waves for the fully water wave equations, whose wave spectrum is independent of time. Besides, they confirmed the existence of this kind of steady-state resonance waves by physical experiments: their experimental results agree well with the theoretical ones gained by means of the HAM. Currently, Prof. Liao proposed the so-called “Clean Numerical Simulation” (CNS) for chaotic dynamic systems, and revealed that chaos is a bridge between the microscopic uncertainty and macroscopic randomness.

Recommendation Based Trust Models for Distributed Systems

The reliability of successful cooperation is a significant issue in distributed systems like e-commerce, peer-to-peer networks, social networks, and mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs).  This requires cooperation among the participating entities to guarantee the formation and sustained existence of cooperation services.  Recommendation based trust management has been proposed in the literature as a mechanism to filter out the misbehaving players while searching for a reliable cooperation. However, building a trust model that adopts recommendations by other players in distributed systems is a challenging problem due to the risk of dishonest recommendations. The talk will present our research investigation on building recommendation system for eCommerce system and MANETs, and the problems of attacks posed by misbehaving players (such as nodes in MANET) while propagating recommendations in the existing trust models. We will propose a recommendation based trust model with a defence scheme, which dynamically filters out attacks related to dishonest recommendations between misbehaving players and show our empirical analysis with a MANET case study.

Brief Biography
Keshav Dahal
University of the West of Scotland, UK





Professor Keshav Dahal is the leader of the Artificial Intelligence, Visual Communication and Networks (AVCN) research centre at the University of the West of Scotland, UK. Prior to this he was with the University of Bradford and the University of Strathclyde, UK. His research interests lie in the areas of Computational intelligence, Machine learning, Big data mining, Scheduling/Optimisation, Trust/security modelling in cloud and distributed systems, and diagnosis/remote healthcare systems. His research paper on ‘reputation/trust modelling’ won the Best Paper award at an IEEE Conference. Prof. Dahal has an extensive experience in terms of research supervision and management of funded projects. He has been principal/co-investigator of 15 EU/UK/Industry funded projects worth over £4 million in last ten years. Currently, he is coordinating a consortium of 20 partners for EU Erasmus Mundus Action 2 ‘SmartLink’ project (2014-2018). He is also a co-investigator of the recently awarded EU H2020-ICT-2014-2 “SELFNET – Framework for Self-organized network management in virtualized and software defended networks” project (2015-2018). He has successfully supervised the completions of 4 Post-Doctoral and 13 PhD studies.Prof. Dahal has published over 100 peer-reviewed journals/conferences papers and 3 edited books, and has sat on organising/programme committees of over 50 reputed international conferences; including the general chair of the IEEE SKIMA 2015. He is a senior member of the IEEE and fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK.
